The Soviet PPSh-41 submachine gun was designed by Georgy Shpagin as a cheaper and simplified alternative to the PPD-40 submachine gun. The PPSh-41 was a magazine-fed, blowback-operated, open-bolt submachine gun. Made primarily of stamped steel, it could be loaded with either a box or drum magazine, using the 7.62×25mm Tokarev pistol round. It was one of the main light weapons of the Soviet armed forces during World War II. The total number of PPSh-41 submachine guns manufactured during World War II is estimated at over 6 million. The submachine gun was made primarily of stamped sheet steel, could be fed by a curved or drum magazine, and fired the 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge. The PPSh-41 was widely used during World War II and the Korean War. The Viet Cong still used it in the 1970s, along with the Chinese Type 50 submachine gun (an unlicensed copy). According to the 2002 edition of The Encyclopedia of Weapons of World War II, the PPSh-41 is still used by some irregular armies.
