The Il-2 (Russian: Илью́шин Ил-2), also known as the Il-2, has no official name, and "shturmovik" is the generic Russian word for "ground-attack aircraft." The word also appears in Western sources as Stormovik and Sturmovik, which offer a correct pronunciation of the original Russian term.
During the war, 36,183 Il-2s were manufactured, and together with its successor, the Il-10, 42,330 were built, making it one of the most produced military aircraft in aviation history, along with the postwar American civilian Cessna 172 and the Soviet multi-purpose biplane, the Polikarpov Po-2 Kukuruznik.
For Il-2 pilots, the aircraft was simply called "Iliuixa." The designers would call it the "flying tank" (Russian: Летающий танк Letaiusxi tank). Luftwaffe fighter pilots would adopt the nickname "Formigo plane" (German: Betonflugzeug). According to some Soviet authors, Wehrmacht soldiers were known as "the Black Death" (German: Schwarzer Tod). NATO's postwar codename was "Bark". The Il-2 would see action in all theaters of the Great Patriotic War, as well as in the Soviet-Japanese War. When the factories were incorporated into the shipyards, Joseph Stalin would tell those in charge that the Il-2 was "essential to the Royal Army, both air and air."
